Funding and incentives

Home insulation can pay for itself within a few years from savings in energy costs. Use the online Home Energy Check from the Energy Saving trust to identify the most cost-effective measures for your home.

The Feed-in Tariff provides support for renewable electricity installations and there is also a Renewable Heat Incentive scheme. There can be further support available for those on low incomes or receiving benefits. See below for details.

And remember that saving and using energy efficiently can give uncosted benefits by reducing carbon emissions and environmental damage from burning fossil fuels.

INSULATION AND BOILER OFFERS – The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) is a government scheme funded by the big six energy suppliers, although you do not have to be a customer. The funding may cover all or part of the cost of loft and cavity wall insulation and boiler repairs or replacements, especially for those with low incomes. For the best offers available in Somerset and to check eligibility requirements contact CSE’s Home Energy Advice Line on 0800 082 2234 or click on the following links for company offers and to apply online:

WARM HOME DISCOUNT SCHEME – You may qualify for £140 off your winter electricity bill if you receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit or you’re on a low income or get certain means-tested benefits. The discount won’t affect your Cold Weather Payment or Winter Fuel Payment and you can also qualify if you use a pre-pay or pay-as-you-go electricity meter. For more information, eligibility requirements of energy suppliers who are part of the scheme and details of how to claim see GOV.UK.

FEED-IN TARIFFS – FITs provide on-going financial support for people generating electricity from renewable sources such as solar PV and wind. For more see GOV.UK

RENEWABLE HEAT INCENTIVE – The domestic RHI gives regular payments over seven years for the installation of an eligible renewable heating system, such as a biomass boiler, solar water heating or heat pump. For further details see GOV.UK

HELPLINES – To find out more call CSE’s Home Energy Advice Line on 0800 082 2234 or the Energy Saving Advice Service, provided by the Energy Saving Trust, on 0300 123 1234.

GREEN DEAL – The new government announced the end of the Green Deal loans and funding schemes to support energy saving home improvements for everyone in 2015. It said it would introduce a replacement scheme that offers a “new value-for-money approach”, but only changes to the Energy Company Obligation have been announced so far (see INSULATION AND BOILER OFFERS above).

CHANGES TO SUPPORT – Government programmes may be subject to change, so Wivey Action on Climate will aim to keep this page up-to-date. It was last updated in October 2016. Once an application for support has been approved it should not be changed retrospectively.
