Earth hour supper – you are invited on 30 March

Wivey Action on Climate and the Environment invites you to an Earth Hour Supper, organised in partnership with St Andrew’s Church, Wiveliscombe, and to be held at the church at 7pm on Saturday, 30 March 2019. This is a family-friendly event with activities for children and, if fine, an astronomical telescope so that we can be amazed at the wonder of the night sky.

Earth Hour is a point in the year, close to the spring solstice and the time when things are beginning to grow, when people across the world switch off their lights for an hour in a show of solidarity and concern for this planet which is our home.

Wivey Action on Climate and the Environment are joining together with St Andrew’s Church to host a Bring & Share Supper, and we are specifically asking people to share vegetarian or vegan food. Why no meat? you may well ask. It is because we are all being encouraged to eat a little less meat, and for that meat to be of high quality, and raised on land which would not be suitable for arable crops. We are very fortunate to live in such an area, and to have easy access to locally grown meat of high quality, raised with good animal welfare. Farming is at its most efficient when it forms a circular, sustainable system involving grass-fed livestock, arable, horticulture and forestry, as the land itself dictates.

While some of us may choose to be veggie, many others just want to find good ways of eating more vegetables. Some are wary of vegetarian cooking, fearing that it may take more work: others may be concerned that veggie meals are more of a duty than a joy. We hope to dispel these concerns by sharing together good, tasty, veggie food and providing a way for us all to share our recipes. If you would like to share some of your recipes, they can be sent to admin@wiveyaction.org.uk and will be accessible from both this website and wiveychurches.org.uk.

Please come along to the church, with your veggie dishes to share, from 7 pm. We will sit down to eat around 7.30pm, putting all the lights out for an hour or so and eating by candlelight. Please note that we are providing baked potatoes, grated cheese, tea and coffee, but please bring your own drinks.

We look forward to welcoming you!
